Malshej Ghat – Mesmerizing Mountains
Malshej Ghat is a mountain pass in the hills of Western Ghats of Maharashtra, India. It is best to visit Malshej during the monsoon season to see all the greenery, waterfall, fog and the cool wind with little drops of rain. Isn’t it beautiful just thinking about it?
For all these reasons, we decided to visit Malshej Ghat on a weekend. It is around 120 km from Pune and takes an approximate time of 2 to 3 hours to reach. We started early at 6.45 AM and our estimated time to reach was 9.30 AM. Our reason to start early was to avoid traffic and crowd; as Malshej becomes crowded on weekends especially when it is raining.
Route from Pune
Pune – Bhosari – Chakan – Manchar – Narayangaon – Junnar – Malshej Ghat
The roads are good; you may find some potholes or small rough patch but not much.
Once you reach Malshej, you will come across a tunnel. It is best if you stop before the tunnel to get a full view of the enthralling ghat; also known as the ‘Thumb Point’.
Malshej Ghat is good for a day trip. For snacks or lunch have it before the ghat starts as you will only find some stalls selling Bhutta, Maggie or tea; which is enjoyed with the rain. You can also carry your own snack and water. Few precautions are required while driving as the fog gets dense when it rains; and the second thing is about the parking. If you are travelling by your car – park it in a safe place and in such a way that it does not block the road.
